New BuzzWords

Its funny how words that we used to think were so big are now familiar.  I remember starting my first company in high school and trying to think of “big” words to think of to describe what I did.  I decided on “Integrated Media Interaction” [Laughter].  My old site probably still ranks for that keyword phrase.

Well, of course now I look back at that phrase and realize it’s outlandish, and didn’t actually describe what I did at the time.  So I thought, are there any “buzz words” that I really have no clue about today.  Some buzzwords include:

Search Engine Optimization
Does anyone really know what that is anyways?  Gee, aren’t we these loyal subjects bowing to this Google god? And that’s a capital ‘G,’ by the way.

New Media
What constitutes as ‘new media?’ Isnt all media “new.”  Who wants old media?  I’ll have the new media.  When do we decide that the new media is old media?

Blogosphere
What, exactly, is the shape of a sphere?  Why cant it be a circle?  Is the coding behind a blog spherical?  Why didnt they just call it a blog realm?  Why? Oh that’s right it would suck about as much as this freaking term.

Social Media
I think Social Media and New Media are in bed together here.  Does social media talk more than New Media?  Is New Media cooler?  Or Is it less mature?

Transparency
What?
You cant see me?
Oh that window must not be transparent enough.

What are we? Superman?  The problem I see with this is this- When does the transparency stop?  When are you looking at nothing?

Web 2.0

We’ll make this one brief.  How high does it go?

Viral Marketing
How do you classify something as Viral Marketing? Yes, we know spreading from person to person.  Isn’t that the goal of regular old marketing?  What was the purpose of those old fashioned commercials?  Wasn’t it to buy the products and tell all your friends.  Viral is the new elite.

Conclusion.  All of these terms are vague and smell of a bad tempered horse keeper and we should stop using them.  From now on, when my boss asks what I’m working on, rather than simply “New Media” I’ll say Regular Blogging Micro-Blogging Updating our Facebook Page Graphic Design Search Engine Optimization.
